Bekal, in Kerala's quieter northern Malabar region, centres on the imposing Bekal Fort, a 17th-century coastal fortress whose ramparts curve out into the Arabian Sea and offer some of the best sunset views on the Kerala coast. Largely free of the crowds further south, the surrounding beaches, backwaters and ayurvedic resorts make it a low-key alternative for travellers wanting Kerala's coastal calm without the busier tourist circuits of Kovalam or Alleppey.

Traveler reviews
★★★★★
Bekal Fort at sunset, with the waves crashing against the ramparts, was one of the most peaceful and beautiful spots we visited in Kerala.
Sandeep N. · December 2023
★★★★☆
Far less crowded than the resorts further south. We spent a few days doing very little besides the beach and an ayurvedic massage, which was exactly what we wanted.
Liz R. · January 2024
★★★★☆
A great quiet alternative to the busier Kerala coast. The fort is genuinely impressive and free of the crowds you'd get at more famous sites.
