Belur and Halebid hold two of the finest examples of Hoysala temple architecture anywhere in India — soapstone shrines covered in such densely detailed carving that entire panels depict battle scenes, mythological epics and rows of elephants, horses and dancers, each one different. Built in the 12th century as the Hoysala capital's great temples, they're quieter and arguably more intricate than many of India's better-known monuments, set among the gentle farmland of southern Karnataka.
