Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, sits between two lakes and mixes a historic walled old city of mosques and bazaars with broad, leafy avenues around the newer town. It's best known as a base for the nearby UNESCO rock shelters of Bhimbetka and the Buddhist stupas of Sanchi, but the city itself has its own charms — the grand Taj-ul-Masajid mosque, boating on the Upper Lake, and excellent Madhya Pradeshi thalis.
