Cinque Terre is five fishing villages clinging to a stretch of Ligurian coastline so steep that for centuries the only connections between them were footpaths cut into terraced vineyards. Today those same trails — along with a coastal train — link Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore, each a cluster of tall, brightly coloured houses tumbling toward small harbours and the sea.

Monterosso al Mare
