Dandong sits on the Yalu River directly opposite North Korea, and that proximity is the whole draw — boat trips glide along the river for close-up views of the closed-off city of Sinuiju, and the broken span of the bombed Yalu River Bridge juts out into the water as a stark Korean War memorial. It's an unusual, slightly surreal border destination where binoculars-toting day-trippers and North Korean trade traffic share the same waterfront promenade.

Traveler reviews
★★★★☆
Genuinely strange and fascinating place — taking a boat right up to the North Korean riverbank and seeing daily life on the other side was something I'll never forget.

★★★★☆
The Broken Bridge museum gives good context on the Korean War history here. Worth combining with the Tiger Mountain Great Wall section nearby.
Yan T. · September 2024
★★★☆☆
Interesting for the novelty value but it's a fairly low-key city otherwise. Two days was plenty for the river and bridge sights.
