Encarnación sits on the Paraná River across from Argentina, best known to travellers as the gateway to the magnificent Jesuit ruins of Trinidad and Jesús, vast stone complexes left by 17th and 18th-century missions that once housed thousands of Guaraní residents. The city itself has a sandy man-made beach along the river (Costanera de Encarnación) and a lively Carnival each February, but the ruins just outside town are the real draw.
