About Golden Circle
The Golden Circle links three of Iceland's most iconic sites into a roughly circular day-loop: Þingvellir National Park (where the earth's tectonic plates visibly rift), Geysir (where erupting hot springs shoot boiling water skyward), and Gullfoss (a thundering double waterfall). Iceland's Golden Circle packs the country's greatest hits into a single day's loop from Reykjavik: the rift valley and parliament site of Þingvellir, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates visibly pull apart; the eruptions of the Geysir geothermal field; and the thundering double drop of Gullfoss waterfall. It's touristy precisely because each stop earns its reputation, and the driving between them is some of the most scenic in the country.

It's drivable year-round, though winter roads can be icy and daylight hours short. Late spring through early autumn gives the easiest driving and longest light.
How long does the Golden Circle take?
The core loop can be done in 6-8 hours including stops, but adding detours like Kerið crater or the Secret Lagoon easily fills a full day.
Do I need a guided tour or can I self-drive?
Both work well — a rental car gives flexibility on timing, while guided tours add commentary and are useful in winter if you're unsure about driving conditions.
What should I expect at Geysir?
The geyser Strokkur erupts every few minutes to 15-20 metres, far more reliably than its dormant namesake Geysir, so most visitors don't wait long for a show.
Is Gullfoss worth visiting if I've seen other waterfalls in Iceland?
Yes — its sheer volume and the two-tiered drop into a rugged canyon give it a different character from Iceland's many cliff-edge falls.
