Great Basin National Park is Nevada's least-visited national park, and that's most of its appeal — ancient bristlecone pines, some over 4,000 years old, cling to the slopes of Wheeler Peak, the marble passages of Lehman Caves wind beneath the mountain, and at night the park's remote location gives it some of the darkest, starriest skies in the continental US, recognised with International Dark Sky Park status.

Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to visit Great Basin National Park?
June to September offers the best access to high-elevation trails and the bristlecone pine groves, as snow can close the upper sections of Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive outside this window.
Are Lehman Caves tours bookable in advance?
Yes — guided tours of Lehman Caves are limited in size and popular, so booking ahead, especially in summer, is recommended through the park's recreation.gov listing.
What is special about the bristlecone pines here?
Some of the park's Great Basin bristlecone pines are among the oldest living organisms on earth, with several specimens over 4,000 years old, reached via a moderate hike from the Wheeler Peak area.
Is Great Basin good for stargazing?
Yes — it's one of the best-rated dark sky locations in the US, with regular astronomy programs in summer and a remote location far from light pollution.
How remote is Great Basin National Park?
Very — the nearest town, Baker, is tiny, and the nearest airports and larger towns are several hours' drive away, so plan for limited fuel, food and phone signal in the area.
Traveler reviews
★★★★★
The bristlecone pine hike puts everything in perspective — standing next to trees older than most civilisations. Stayed for the night sky program and it was the best stargazing I've ever seen.

★★★★★
Lehman Caves tour was fascinating and the ranger was excellent. Barely saw another person on the Wheeler Peak trails despite it being summer — total solitude.

★★★★☆
Remote doesn't begin to describe it — fill up on fuel before you arrive. Worth the drive though, especially for the dark skies; I've never seen the Milky Way so clearly.
