Guatapé is a small Colombian town near Medellín famous for two things: houses painted with brightly tiled relief panels (zócalos) depicting everything from animals to family trades, and the giant granite monolith of El Peñol rising sheer from the reservoir beside it. Climbing the 700-odd steps built into a crack in the rock rewards visitors with views over a maze of green islands and inlets created when the valley was dammed.
