Xingping is the small riverside town that produced one of China's most iconic views — the karst peaks and bamboo rafts on the Li River here appear on the back of the 20-yuan note. A short bamboo raft or boat ride from the village brings you face to face with that exact scene, and the surrounding farmland and limestone towers can be explored by bike on quiet roads largely free of the crowds that fill Guilin and Yangshuo.

Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to visit Xingping?
Spring and autumn bring mist-wrapped mornings that are especially photogenic on the Li River, while avoiding the heaviest summer rains and crowds.
How do I get to Xingping from Yangshuo?
Xingping is about 30–40 minutes from Yangshuo by bus or taxi, or reachable by a longer Li River cruise from Guilin.
What is the '20-yuan view'?
A stretch of the Li River near Xingping featuring karst peaks that match the scene printed on the back of China's 20-yuan banknote, best seen by bamboo raft at sunrise.
Is Xingping less crowded than Yangshuo?
Yes — Xingping is a small village with far fewer tourists than Yangshuo, making it a good base or day trip for a quieter karst experience.
What can I do around Xingping?
Bamboo rafting on the Li River, cycling through karst farmland, and exploring the old village's Ming and Qing dynasty buildings.
Traveler reviews
★★★★★
The bamboo raft trip at sunrise was magical — far fewer people than I expected and the karst scenery genuinely matches the postcards.

Cycled out from Xingping into the countryside and barely saw another tourist all day. A much more peaceful alternative to Yangshuo.

Small village but a great base for a couple of nights — early morning river views were the highlight of our whole Guangxi trip.
