Scattered across a surreal landscape of giant boulders and banana plantations, Hampi's ruins were once the heart of the Vijayanagara Empire, one of the richest cities in the medieval world before it was sacked in 1565. Today the carved temples, royal enclosures and stone chariot at Vittala Temple sit half-reclaimed by the landscape, making it as much a place for boulder-scrambling and sunset-watching as for history.
