The 12th-century Golden Fort rises from Thar Desert dunes in sandstone so fine and warm it glows amber at sunset—the entire outer wall is the fort. Inside, narrow lanes between merchant havelis (mansions) display erotic carvings and mirror-work; 99 shops line the bazar. Camel herds graze the dunes beyond the walls; the fort casts a shadow 40 kilometres across the sand.
