Karakol sits at the eastern end of Issyk-Kul, in the shadow of some of the Tian Shan's highest peaks, and serves as Kyrgyzstan's premier base for trekking — the Ala-Kol lake trek and routes into the Karakol Valley and Jeti-Oguz gorge all start from here. The town itself retains a distinctive Russian-Dungan character, with carved wooden cottages, an ornate wooden Orthodox cathedral, and one of the country's oldest mosques, while the surrounding mountains offer everything from day hikes to multi-day treks and, in winter, increasingly popular off-piste skiing.
