The Sun Temple at Konark is one of India's most extraordinary monuments, a 13th-century shrine built in the form of a colossal stone chariot with twelve pairs of intricately carved wheels and seven horses straining to pull it across the sky. Set near the Odisha coast, its weathered sandstone surfaces are covered in some of the finest sculpture in Indian temple architecture, and a short drive away the temple town of Puri offers beaches and another major pilgrimage site.

Traveler reviews

★★★★★

The carved wheels of the Sun Temple are unbelievably detailed — you could spend an hour just looking at one of them. A real highlight of Odisha.

★★★★★

Less crowded than Khajuraho but every bit as impressive in terms of carving. Combine with Puri for a great day out from Bhubaneswar.

Anil K. · February 2024
★★★★☆

Bring a hat — there's very little shade — but the temple itself is breathtaking and the museum adds useful context.
