La Ceiba is Honduras's main jumping-off point for the Bay Islands, a humid, lively port city overshadowed by the Pico Bonito massif and known nationally for its raucous Carnaval each May. Most travellers pass through en route to Roatán or Utila, but La Ceiba itself has access to whitewater rafting, zip-lining, and Pico Bonito National Park's cloud forest trails for those willing to stop a little longer.

Traveler reviews
★★★★☆
Spent a couple of days rafting the Cangrejal River before heading to Roatán, great rapids and a beautiful jungle setting. La Ceiba itself is rough around the edges but functional.

★★★★☆
Hiked in Pico Bonito National Park and the cloud forest was stunning, waterfalls and birdlife everywhere. Used La Ceiba mainly as a base for a couple of nights before the ferry.

★★★★★
Happened to be there during Carnaval and it was an incredible atmosphere, parades and music all through the city. Wasn't expecting to enjoy the mainland stop as much as we did.
