The Makgadikgadi Pans are vast, blinding-white salt flats in northern Botswana, remnants of an ancient lake that once rivalled the size of Switzerland. In the dry season the cracked pans stretch to the horizon in eerie silence, while the green season brings one of Africa's great zebra migrations and the chance to see meerkats, flamingos and quad-bike across an almost lunar landscape under huge night skies.
