Marfa is a tiny west Texas ranching town that became an unlikely art world destination after minimalist sculptor Donald Judd moved here in the 1970s and filled old army buildings with permanent installations, drawing galleries, food trucks and design-conscious travellers to its wide, empty streets ever since. By night, the mysterious Marfa Lights still draw crowds to a roadside viewing area east of town, and the surrounding high desert offers some of the biggest skies in Texas.

Traveler reviews
★★★★★
The Chinati Foundation installations were unlike anything else I've seen — huge aluminium boxes catching the desert light in an old artillery shed.

Tiny town but surprisingly good food trucks and galleries. Drove out to see the Marfa Lights and did see some unexplained flickers on the horizon.

Combined with a Big Bend trip and Marfa was a fun, quirky contrast — Prada Marfa out on the highway is a must for a quick photo stop.
