Matmata is famous for its troglodyte dwellings — homes dug as deep pits into the soft chalky earth, with rooms tunnelled into the surrounding walls to stay cool in the desert heat. One of these underground homes was used as Luke Skywalker's house in the original Star Wars film, and the village now sits as a fascinating, slightly surreal stop between Tunisia's coast and the Sahara.
