The rebuilt Stari Most bridge over the emerald Neretva
Mostar's Stari Most (Old Bridge) is the Balkans' most iconic image—a 16th-century stone arch spanning the emerald Neretva River, rebuilt after its destruction in the 1993 siege. The bridge reconnects a formerly divided Muslim and Christian city, its reconstruction symbolizing reconciliation. Divers leap from the bridge each summer, a tradition restored after the war. The old town on either side combines Ottoman architecture with war-scarred buildings documenting recent tragedy.
