Ancient peninsula of churches on the Black Sea
Nessebar is an ancient settlement on a narrow peninsula jutting into the Black Sea, crowned with ruins of Byzantine churches predating most European architecture. The tiny pedestrian old town compresses 3,000 years of history—Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman—into walkable lanes where reconstructed churches now house galleries and restaurants. It's touristy but the archaeology is genuinely astounding.
