Óbidos is a postcard medieval village, entirely encircled by 14th-century walls that visitors can walk along for views over a maze of whitewashed, yellow- and blue-trimmed houses below. Once a gift from Portuguese kings to their queens, it's now best known for its annual book and chocolate festivals, and for ginjinha — a sour cherry liqueur traditionally served in a chocolate cup.
