Last dhow-building city on Arabia's open coast

About Sur

Sur, on Oman's rugged eastern coast, is one of the last places in Arabia where wooden dhows are still hand-built using techniques passed down for generations. Whitewashed merchant houses and a lighthouse-guarded lagoon recall the city's seafaring past, while nearby beaches at Ras al-Jinz offer the chance to watch endangered green turtles nesting under the stars.
