Orchha is a small, sleepy town on the banks of the Betwa River that feels frozen in the 16th century, its skyline dominated by sandstone Bundela palaces and a cluster of cenotaphs (chhatris) that glow gold at sunset. Far less crowded than Khajuraho or Agra, it rewards slow exploration — climbing the Jahangir Mahal's terraces, watching langurs leap between temple spires, and floating past the riverside chhatris by rowboat.
