Oudomxay is northern Laos at its most unvarnished — a dusty crossroads town surrounded by limestone karst and terraced hills, where Lao, Khmu and Hmong communities trade in the morning market and the Chinese-built highway hums with cross-border lorries. Few travellers linger, but those who do find easy access to the limestone caves of Chom Ong and villages where traditional weaving and farming continue much as they always have.
