Mosaics and Aphrodite's birthplace on the Mediterranean
Paphos sits on Cyprus's southwestern coast, an ancient city famous for Roman mosaics and the mythological birthplace of Aphrodite (the sea goddess emerged from foam at Aphrodite's Rock nearby). The archaeological sites span Greek, Roman, Frankish, and Venetian periods. Modern Paphos is a cosmopolitan beach resort, but the Old Town retains charm, and the nearby Akamas Peninsula offers hiking into wilderness.
