Positano tumbles down a cliffside in tiers of pastel houses, lemon groves and bougainvillea, with a small pebble beach at the bottom that somehow anchors the whole vertiginous scene. It's the most photographed stop on the Amalfi Coast, and while the steps can be punishing in summer heat, the views over the Tyrrhenian Sea from almost anywhere in town make every climb worthwhile.

Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to visit Positano?
May, June and September offer warm weather without the peak-July-August crowds and heat, when the town and roads can become very congested.
Is Positano very hilly?
Extremely — the town is built on a steep slope with many staircases, so comfortable shoes are essential, and luggage can be a real challenge.
How do I get around the Amalfi Coast from Positano?
Ferries between coastal towns are often faster and more pleasant than the narrow, winding coastal road, which gets heavily congested in summer.
Is Positano expensive?
Yes, it's one of the priciest spots on the Amalfi Coast for dining and accommodation; nearby towns like Praiano can offer similar views at lower cost.
What is the beach like in Positano?
Spiaggia Grande is a pebble beach with a mix of free and paid sections, lined with restaurants and views back up at the town.
Traveler reviews
★★★★★
Every turn revealed another impossibly perfect view. The steps are brutal in the heat but the lemon granita stops along the way help a lot.

★★★★★
Took the ferry to Amalfi and Capri from Positano, which avoided the road traffic entirely and was scenic in itself.

★★★☆☆
Stunning but very crowded and pricey in August — would visit again in shoulder season for a calmer experience.
