Pushkar revolves around its sacred lake, ringed by 52 bathing ghats and said to have been created when Brahma dropped a lotus flower to earth — a story that makes the town one of Hinduism's holiest sites and home to one of its only Brahma temples. For one week each autumn the town's population swells many times over for the Pushkar Camel Fair, when thousands of camels, traders and pilgrims fill the surrounding dunes alongside a sea of tourists.
