Sanchi is home to the oldest surviving Buddhist monuments in India, a hilltop complex of stupas dating back over two thousand years, their gateways (toranas) carved with intricate scenes from the Buddha's life. The Great Stupa, a vast hemispherical dome encircled by carved railings, is the centrepiece of this UNESCO World Heritage site, set in quiet countryside that makes it feel like stepping back into ancient India.

Traveler reviews
★★★★★
The carvings on the Great Stupa's gateways are extraordinary considering their age — one of the most underrated historic sites we've visited in India.

★★★★★
Peaceful hilltop setting and very few other visitors when we went. A perfect half-day trip from Bhopal.

★★★★☆
Smaller than I expected but the detail in the stone carving is incredible up close. Bring a guide to explain the stories on the gateways.
