Sigiriya's Lion Rock rises abruptly nearly 200 metres from the surrounding plains, its summit crowned by the ruins of a 5th-century royal palace reached via a dramatic stairway that passes through the paws of a giant lion gateway and beside a gallery of famous frescoes of celestial maidens. The climb is steep and exposed in places, but the views from the top across the symmetrical water gardens below and the forested plains beyond make it one of Sri Lanka's most iconic sights.

Early morning, ideally at opening time, is best to avoid both the heat and crowds on the exposed rock climb; the dry season (roughly January-September) is most comfortable overall.

How difficult is the climb?

It involves around 1,200 steps with some steep, exposed sections including spiral staircases; reasonable fitness is needed but it's manageable for most visitors taking it slowly.

What are the frescoes?

Ancient paintings of female figures, often called the 'Sigiriya Damsels', found in a sheltered gallery partway up the rock, among the few surviving examples of secular ancient Sri Lankan art.

What else is there to see near Sigiriya?

The nearby Pidurangala Rock offers an alternative climb with views back over Sigiriya itself, and Dambulla's cave temples are a short drive away.
