Thanjavur, the former capital of the Chola dynasty, is home to the Brihadeeswarar Temple, a UNESCO-listed 11th-century masterpiece whose massive granite vimana (tower) was, remarkably, carved from a single block of stone. The city remains a centre for the bronze-casting and classical music traditions the Cholas helped establish, and its royal palace and Saraswathi Mahal Library add further layers to one of Tamil Nadu's richest historical towns.

Traveler reviews
★★★★★
The scale and precision of the Brihadeeswarar Temple's tower is hard to believe given its age. A genuine highlight of Tamil Nadu.
Priya M. · January 2024
★★★★☆
Watching artisans create traditional bronze sculptures using techniques centuries old was fascinating, and prices were reasonable if you wanted to buy a piece.
Steve A. · December 2023
★★★★★
Quieter and less touristy than Madurai but every bit as historically significant. The palace library was an unexpected highlight.
