Tierradentro is one of South America's most mysterious archaeological sites, a scattering of elaborate underground tombs carved into the hillsides of Colombia's Cauca department over a thousand years ago. Unlike the open ruins of San Agustín nearby, Tierradentro's hypogea are hidden chambers reached by steep staircases, their walls painted with red and black geometric designs that have survived centuries underground. The surrounding countryside of green hills and small Nasa indigenous communities adds to the sense of stepping well off the map.

Best areas to stay in Tierradentro

Alto de San Andrés and El Duende
Additional tomb sites reached by hiking trails through farmland and forest, each with a distinct character.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Tierradentro?
The dry season (December to March, and July to August) makes the hikes between tomb sites far more manageable, as the trails can get very muddy in wet weather.
How do I get to Tierradentro?
The nearest town, San Andrés de Pisimbalá, is reached by bus from Popayán (around 4–5 hours) on a partly unpaved road; from Bogotá it's typically an overnight journey.
What's the food scene like?
Simple, hearty Colombian highland fare — soups, grilled meats, arepas, and fresh fruit — served in small family-run comedores near the museum and village.
Is Tierradentro worth the effort to reach?
Yes, for travellers interested in pre-Columbian history — the tombs are unlike anything else in Colombia, and the journey itself passes through beautiful, little-visited countryside.
What language is spoken in Tierradentro?
Spanish is the main language, with Nasa Yuwe spoken among local indigenous communities; English is very limited.

Traveler reviews

★★★★★

Genuinely one of the strangest and most fascinating places I've visited — climbing down into the painted tombs felt like discovering a secret.

Anna K. · January 2024
★★★★☆

The journey is long but the hike between tomb sites through the countryside was as memorable as the tombs themselves.

Felipe G. · August 2023
★★★★☆

Far quieter than San Agustín — we barely saw another visitor all day. Bring a torch for the darker tomb interiors.
