The White Desert in Egypt's Western Desert is a surreal landscape of chalk-white rock formations sculpted by wind into mushroom and iceberg shapes, rising from golden sand near the Farafra Oasis. Overnight camping among these formations, watching them shift colour from white to pink to gold at sunset and sunrise, is one of the most otherworldly experiences in North Africa.
Best areas to stay in White Desert
White Desert National Park
The core area of chalk-white rock formations, the main draw for overnight camping trips.
Black Desert
A volcanic landscape of black-topped hills, usually visited en route between Bahariya and the White Desert.
Crystal Mountain
A small outcrop of quartz crystal, a popular photo stop on desert safaris.
Bahariya Oasis
The nearest town with guesthouses, hot springs and palm groves, used as a base for organising trips.
Getting to White Desert
✈
Flights

~5 hours direct from London to Cairo, plus the overland journey to Bahariya.
🚕

Travel within the desert is entirely by 4x4 safari vehicle with a local guide; Bahariya town itself is small and walkable.
Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to visit the White Desert?
October to April offers cooler temperatures for camping; summer daytime heat in the Western Desert is extreme.
How do you visit the White Desert?
Most visitors join a multi-day 4x4 safari from Cairo or Bahariya Oasis, typically including the Black Desert and Crystal Mountain en route, with an overnight camp among the chalk formations.
Is camping in the White Desert comfortable?
It's basic but memorable — simple mattresses under the stars or in tents, campfire dinners, and no facilities, so come prepared for a true desert camping experience.
What else is there to see nearby?
Bahariya Oasis has hot and cold springs, ancient tombs, and palm groves, making it a natural base before or after the White Desert trip.
Do I need a guide for the White Desert?
Yes — the terrain is remote and easy to get lost in, so trips are done with experienced local drivers/guides in 4x4 vehicles.
Traveler reviews
★★★★★
Camping among those chalk formations under a full sky of stars was one of the most magical nights of my life. The shapes really do look like something from another planet.

★★★★★
Did a 2-night safari from Cairo including the Black Desert and hot springs at Bahariya — basic but unforgettable, and our guide cooked amazing campfire food.
Nora B. · February 2024
★★★★☆
Bumpy ride to get there but completely worth it for the sunrise over the white formations. Bring warm layers, the desert nights get cold.
