White Sands National Park protects the world's largest gypsum dune field, a blinding-white sea of soft, sculpted dunes in southern New Mexico that feels closer to snow than desert, especially at sunset when the sand glows pink and orange. Visitors sled down the dunes on plastic discs, walk marked trails that disappear and reform with the wind, and watch sunsets that turn the whole landscape into a single, glowing sheet of colour.
