Frequently asked questions
Is Emerald Lake really that turquoise?
Yes—it's the glacial silt suspended in the water that creates that jewel-like color. Photos barely do it justice.
Can I swim in Emerald Lake?
Technically yes, but the water is glacial melt and stays near freezing even in summer. Only the brave or insane attempt it.
How do I see the Burgess Shale fossils?
Only guided tours are permitted. Book with the visitor center in advance.
Is the park crowded?
Much less crowded than Banff and Lake Louise. Summer weekends are busy, but weekdays are peaceful.
What's the best season to visit?
July–September for hiking. Late summer (August–early September) is best for accessible trails and warm days.

Emerald Lake is real—that color exists. The hike around the lake is perfect, not too hard, and you feel like you've discovered something secret.

Takakkaw Falls is absurdly powerful. We stood under the spray and couldn't hear each other. Yoho is the hidden gem of the Rockies.

★★★★☆
Fewer crowds than Lake Louise but equally stunning. The turquoise water and waterfalls justify the drive from Banff. Worth the detour.
