Culebra is what the Caribbean looked like before the cruise ships arrived — a sleepy Puerto Rican island with one small town, no traffic lights, and Playa Flamenco, regularly ranked among the best beaches in the world, all to itself outside of weekends. The pace here is dictated by the ferry schedule and very little else. Bring cash, bring sunscreen, and don't expect much beyond a beach chair and turquoise water — that's the entire point.

Best areas to stay in Culebra

Dewey
The island's only town, a small grid of streets with guesthouses, golf carts for hire, and most of the restaurants and shops.
Playa Flamenco
The famous crescent of white sand and clear water, with basic facilities and the rusting hulks of old army tanks at one end.
Playa Zoni
A quieter, wilder beach on the eastern tip, popular for sunrise and usually far less crowded than Flamenco.
Culebrita
A small offshore island reachable by boat, with a historic lighthouse, tide pools, and some of the clearest water in the archipelago.

Getting around
Golf carts are the standard way to get around Dewey and nearby beaches; there are no traffic lights and few paved roads beyond the centre.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Culebra?
December to April offers the driest weather and calmest seas. Hurricane season runs June to November, with peak risk in September.
How do I get to Culebra?
The Puerto Rico Ferry Authority runs passenger ferries from Ceiba on the main island, taking around 45-60 minutes. Small charter flights also connect from Ceiba and San Juan.
What's the food like on Culebra?
Simple and seafood-focused — think fresh-caught fish, tacos, and Puerto Rican comfort food at a handful of laid-back spots around Dewey, the island's only town.
Is Culebra expensive?
Food and lodging run higher than mainland Puerto Rico since most goods arrive by ferry, but it remains far cheaper than private-island destinations elsewhere in the Caribbean.
What language is spoken on Culebra?
Spanish is the everyday language, though as part of Puerto Rico, English is widely understood, especially around guesthouses and tour operators.

Traveler reviews

★★★★★

Playa Flamenco lived up to every photo I'd seen — and on a weekday we had a huge stretch of it to ourselves. Renting a golf cart for the day was the highlight.

The ferry can be unpredictable with timings so build in flexibility, but once you're there the slow pace is exactly what we wanted after busy San Juan.

Took the boat trip out to Culebrita and it felt like having our own private island for the afternoon. Bring snacks and water, there's very little out there.
