Chilika Lake, Asia's largest brackish water lagoon, stretches along the Odisha coast as a maze of channels, islands and sandbars that host one of the largest populations of Irrawaddy dolphins in the world alongside enormous flocks of migratory birds in winter. Boat trips from villages like Satapada thread between fishing communities and the narrow spit separating the lagoon from the Bay of Bengal, making it one of eastern India's most underrated wildlife destinations.

Seeing Irrawaddy dolphins surface around our boat was magical, and the sandbar beach at the end of the trip was almost empty.
