Isla Holbox is a car-free island off the northern tip of the Yucatán, where sandy streets, golf carts and bicycles replace traffic, and bioluminescent plankton light up the night-time shallows in summer. Between June and September it's also one of the best places in the world to swim alongside whale sharks, the gentle giants that gather offshore to feed.

A ferry from Chiquilá (about 20 minutes) is the only way to reach the island; Chiquilá is roughly 2-2.5 hours by road from Cancún or 3 hours from Tulum.
