Khor Virap is Armenia's most photographed monastery, a cluster of stone churches on a small hill with Mount Ararat rising, snow-capped and enormous, just across the Turkish border behind it. The site marks where St Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned in a pit before converting Armenia's king to Christianity, and the pit itself can still be descended via a narrow ladder beneath the main church.
