Punta del Este is Uruguay's glitzy summer playground, a peninsula of high-rise apartment blocks, yacht-filled marinas and long sandy beaches on both its calm bay side and wilder ocean side. Every January and February it fills with wealthy South American holidaymakers, but the famous half-buried Fingers sculpture on Playa Brava and a string of beach clubs make it an easy, photogenic stop even for a day or two.
