Real de Catorce is a former silver-mining boomtown stranded high in the San Luis Potosí desert, reached via a mile-long tunnel blasted through the mountain that still serves as the only road in. Once home to over 40,000 people, it now has a fraction of that population living among crumbling colonial mansions, a grand neoclassical church that draws pilgrims each October, and cobbled streets where horses outnumber cars. The surrounding Wirikuta desert is sacred to the Huichol (Wixárika) people and is also one of the best places in Mexico to see the night sky free of light pollution.

Traveler reviews

★★★★★

Driving through that mile-long tunnel into town feels like stepping back in time. The pilgrimage festival we caught by chance was incredible to witness.

★★★★★

One of the most atmospheric places I've been in Mexico — half-ruined mansions, cobbled streets, and an almost eerie quiet at night. The stargazing was unreal.

Karen S. · March 2024
★★★★☆

A bit of an effort to get to but that's part of the appeal — very few tourists, and the horseback ride into the desert at sunset was magical.
